What is an End-of-Life Doula?

The End-of-Life Doulas at Comforting Transitions are trained professionals who provide support during the final stages of life. Typically working in tandem with palliative care and hospice teams, Death Doulas, like those at Comforting Transitions, focus on the emotional, psychological, and spiritual needs of both the dying individual and their family. Unlike medical practitioners who concentrate on pain management and physical health, our job is to create a peaceful, dignified dying process that honors the unique desires and wishes of your loved one nearing death.

Our Services

Typically, our end-of-life care services can begin weeks or even months before death. Our goal is to help you, and your loved ones prepare emotionally, mentally, and spiritually for the inevitable. Some key roles that we play include:

Vigil & Vigil Planning
Sitting bedside during the active dying phase, offering presence and comfort for the family.

Emotional Support
Offering active listening, addressing fears and concerns, and holding space for difficult conversations about death.

After-Death Care
Supporting families in the immediate aftermath of death, assisting with memorial preparations, and providing grief support.

The Difference Between Death Doulas and Hospice

Many people assume that end-of-life care through hospice services covers all aspects of a peaceful death, but the truth is, hospice services tend to focus on medical care. Hospice care typically addresses physical pain management, symptom control, and support during the final months of life. While incredibly valuable, hospice can be constrained by time limits and structured protocols.

An End-of-Life Doula, by contrast, takes a more individualized approach. Our role is flexible and tailored specifically to the individual and family. While hospice may handle the medical and clinical side, a Death Doula fills the gaps by providing consistent, personalized companionship and addressing the often-overlooked emotional and existential dimensions of death.

By partnering with both palliative care and hospice services, we’re able to ensure that all aspects of the dying process—physical, emotional, and spiritual—are attended to in a seamless, integrative way. This holistic approach will bring a significant benefit your family and your loved one, creating a more dignified, meaningful end of life experience.

Support During the Final Moments of Life: Vigil & Vigil Planning

The last days of life are often referred to as the vigil, or the active dying phase of life. During this time, we find that loved ones can be overwhelmed with what to do next, how to cope and what final steps should be taken before and after a loved one has passed. The end-of-life care we provide at Comforting Transitions directly reflects your loved ones wishes.

The Vigil

Our primary focus at this stage is maintaining and advocating for the spirit of a plan they had worked out beforehand during the vigil planning process. With you, we’ll review the choices and options available with all those involved as the vigil begins. Typically, we’ll use sounds, readings, comfort touch, guided imagery, and ritual to deepen the sense of meaning and bring greater comfort to everyone involved. We may assist in physical care, such as repositioning, adjusting or changing bedding, providing basic oral care, and offering general comfort care.

Vigil Planning

At Comforting Transitions, we’re here to gently guide you through every aspect of planning a vigil. We can help complete and review Advance Directive documents to ensure your wishes are clear and respected. If you need one, we provide the 'Five Wishes' document, a living will that reflects not only your medical decisions but also your personal, emotional, and spiritual needs.

We’ll work with you to choose the most comforting location for your final days, offering emotional and spiritual support throughout the process. We understand that planning a vigil can be emotionally overwhelming, but you don’t have to go through it alone. We’re here to support you at every step, ensuring your vigil is as meaningful, beautiful, and peaceful as you wish.

Bereavement Support

Bereavement support remains available to your loved ones, offering grief support and helping them process the loss. We can assist with memorial planning and legacy creation to ensure that your memory is honored in a way that is meaningful to you and your family.
